You have all heard the word and i am sure you are wondering what the hell…So how it works is that we all have a RANK, in your home, at work and in your social structure. At home you will always be the child, no matter how old you are and how successful you are you will be the child in your parents house. The same is true in the work space, we just do not see it but we need to be aware of it.

Let me explain, a Teacher of 1st graders is like a wizard to the kids. Whatever she/he says is the truth and there is no disputing that. If you have young kids or have had you will remember….’but teacher said’.. so at work she has a high RANK. Problem is at home she is abused verbally by her husband, there she also has a RANK, sadly a low rank. Same applies in the boardroom, there is a board meeting with mixture of junior and senior associates. One of the junior associates makes a suggestion, the CEO instantly says ‘ that is a bad idea’. You see because the CEO said it is bad, it is actually worse. He does not know his RANK. If another junior associate said it, it would not have been that bad.

So in live especially at work , when you with peers or subordinates you have RANK, You need to be mindful of the situation and and where you fit into the conversation. Your RANK impacts the weight of your words and you need to be mindful of what you say depending on your RANK. If you want a positive work environment just know your RANK and try to the best of your ability to build or lead the conversation making the team feel inclusive at all times.
