Dear Friends
Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experiences or knowledgeable person according to Google. In this context we have all have mentor’s in our lives. You would agree that most of us would have had our Dad’s or Mom’s as our first mentor or a close family member. As we grew up many Mentor’s would have crossed our parts from the sport fields, academics and life in general. I was very blesses to have a Dad and Mom who had amazing work ethic and lived a fugal life. My test is, if you have cheese in your fridge you doing well. Cheese is a luxury item, if you have financial problems you should and would not have cheese in your fridge.
In Retail the same applies, I have been blessed to have many Mentor’s across my 30 year retail career. Most Mentor’s are your boss, HR or a training manager. Remember you receiving experience from more experienced person. The trick is you need to acknowledge that and want to learn. Nobody said, come come let me hold your hand and I will make you a great retailer one day. No, I had to raise my hand and ask for advise, attend the training and apply for the next promotion. Life is cruel like that. You have to want it, research it and then go and claim it. Today the internet makes it so easy and the information is so easy to find, back in my day you had to ask 😉
The reason I write this is to encourage you to have a Mentor in your life, does not matter what industry you find yourself in, a good Mentor will help you problem solve and explore options you might not have thought of. You have probably even been a Mentor you your team, staff or family members. In these crazy times we live we will all have to think out the box and explore new careers, new income streams and new relationships. I would like to encourage you to find a Mentor, formal or informal and have those weekly or bi-weekly cups of coffee. Unpack the reality of the situation and explore new ways of working.
